The previous Friday, January 6th, the Comparsas took place. It is a parade of great dimensions that takes place in Cuenca for ‘Holy Innocents’ Day’. What for the Americans would be April Fools’ Day. The celebration in its beginnings had a strictly Catholic origin that over the years acquired pagan elements. The parade consists of decorated cars and costumed people usually representing a theme. This year’s theme was ‘Golden Mask’. There were 22 participants in total. The parade runs for 10 blocks along Huayna Capac Avenue, up to the Vergel bridge. At the end, a committee is in charge of awarding the most original and creative group. The winner of this contest for this year was the South American Institute of Technology with their theme ‘I am a legend, a post COVID Ecuador’.
